Opening Night on January 27, 2012

Throughout the evening, a free shuttle will run between Grand Center and the Kemper Art Museum. Events will be held at the Bruno David Gallery, the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts, and the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum at Washington University in St. Louis. Shuttles will run approximately every 15 minutes, and the last shuttle will depart from the Kemper and Grand Center at 9pm.

Bill Kohn at Bruno David Gallery

In the WOP Space, the gallery presents a series of works on paper titled Grand Center Series by the late Bill Kohn. In his final body of work, which began in 2002 and continued until his death in November 2004, Kohn returned his focus to St. Louis, painting the landscape of historic and modern buildings around Grand Boulevard in the Grand Center arts district of St. Louis. Kohn created these pieces while working on several large-scale paintings for the 2006 exhibition Centering on the Grand at the CAM (Contemporary Art Museum Saint Louis). Kohn stated in 2004 that, “Grand Center as a landscape embodies forces of creativity, decay, restoration, preservation, learning and innovation, interacting over time in the heart of a metropolitan region, whose rich character is often overlooked by its own residents,” which demonstrates his interest in bringing to light the culture and history of the city through his work.

Bill Kohn traveled the world, sharing his vision of many significant places through paintings that were celebrated for their vibrant color and dizzying perspectives. Machu Picchu in Peru, the Duomo in Florence, the bridges of Paris, the Grand Canyon, Khajuraho, and Jaiselmer in India were his favorite sites. Bill Kohn (1931-2004) was born and worked in Saint Louis, Missouri. Kohn exhibited at the Saint Louis University Museum of Art, Casa de la Cultura in Oaxaca, Mexico, Contemporary Art Museum Saint Louis (CAM), Charles A. Wustum Museum of Fine Arts in Racine, WI, Saint Louis Art Museum in St. Louis, Indianapolis Museum of Art in Indianapolis, IN, Casa de Cultura in Guadalajara, Mexico, Krannert Museum in Champaign, IL, The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, MO, San Francisco Museum in San Francisco, Los Angeles Museum in Los Angeles, and Oakland Museum in Oakland, CA.

Mario Trejo at Bruno David Gallery

Bruno David Gallery is pleased to present in the Front Room an exhibition titled “Centered” by Mario Trejo.

This new work is a continuation of the ongoing series “Catharsis”. This series is a refreshing remix of the artist’s process while reiterating his core artistic values. The title has its root in the Greek katharsos, for “pure”. The binary chromatics, parity of mark making, and consistency of dimensions evident in all of the pieces are what Trejo has imposed on his own process: a purification of form and content. What results from this structure are compositions that radiate a controlled chaos and a sophisticated treatment of volume, perspective, and scale. Trejo uses a black and white palette to emphasize the contrast between background and gesture. The images he has created utilize this method to elegantly occupy the picture plane as if in a photogram or some sort of electroscopic imaging print. This body of work denotes an evolution of the artist’s vision of the mark as the building block of the performance and remnant, and of the void as the arena for battles between the hand and instrument, space and perception, part and whole. Trejo’s fundamental commitment to purity results in work that embodies mystery, metaphysical energy, and optical wonder. This commitment serves as a testament to the artist’s disciplined mind and unflinchingly precise hand.

Mario Trejo received his B.F.A. from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and his M.F.A. from the San Francisco Art Institute. His next exhibition will be at the Illinois State Museum/Chicago Gallery in Fall 2011. Trejo currently lives and works in Illinois.

Bruno David Gallery is pleased to present Charles Schwall’s second solo exhibition with the gallery entitled "Source Confluence".

Schwall’s new paintings investigate his longstanding interest in curvilinear and organic formations found in nature that are connected to growth, water imagery, and the life sciences. The exhibition, "Source Confluence", explores the origins, metamorphosis, and rhythms of life forces through oil and gouache paintings. The works employ a vocabulary of soft colors distinguished by lightness and subtlety. His abstract imagery combines multiple forms to create forces of expansion and contraction that reveal processes in which organic life appears. A fully illustrated catalogue with an essay by Andrea Ferber accompanies the exhibit.

Schwall’s paintings have shown in solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally, including New York, Kansas City, Chicago, Stockton CA, and Asuncion, Paraguay. Recently his work was included in thematic exhibitions that address color as a language and as an abstraction. Born in Denver, he currently works and lives in St. Louis, and is a teaching artist at The St. Michael School of Clayton. As an educator, Schwall studied the educational system in the municipality of Reggio-Emilia, Italy, and co-edited and co-authored the book, In the Spirit of the Studio: Learning from the Atelier of Reggio Emilia. He holds a BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute and an MFA from Washington University in St. Louis.

Bruno David Gallery is pleased to announce the recent acquisition of Jill Downen’s Tendon on Pallet, (2009) by the Oklahoma City Museum of Art. Jill Downen is a 2010 John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellow and a National Endowment for the Arts Fellow.

Tendon on Pallet is a sculpture produced in conjunction with the installation "Counterparts", which was on view at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art from February to May 2011. "Counterparts" offered viewers an immersive experience where they were able to contemplate ideas about the body and architecture, temporality and permanence, the material and immaterial. A fully illustrated catalogue with an essay by Britt-Marie Schiller was published. We are delighted that Jennifer Klos, Associate Curator, Alison Amick, Curator of Collections and Glen Gentele, President of the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, have recognized the strength of Downen’s artwork and that Tendon on Pallet will further enhance the museum's great Contemporary Art collection.

Saint Louis Art Museum Recent Acquisition of Ann Hamilton's "Carriage"

Bruno David Gallery is pleased to announce the recent acquisition of Ann Hamilton’s Carriage, (2009) by The Saint Louis Art Museum.

Carriage is a small edition produced in conjunction with the installation of Human Carriage, which was commissioned in 2009 by the Guggenheim Museum, as part of "The Third Mind: American Artists Contemplate Asia, 1860–1989", and curated by Alexandra Munroe, Senior Curator of Asian Art. Ann Hamilton’s Carriage is a set of “guillotined” books representing the vast bibliography that serves as the intellectual foundation for the artwork. In this art piece, Hamilton investigates the processes of circulation and interpretation of Asian literary and philosophical texts. Her “materialization of reading” in ring-shaped form of layered fragment of the books embraces intellectual basis of the sculpture.

We are delighted that Elizabeth Wyckoff, Curator of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs and Tricia Paik, Assistant Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art of Saint Louis Art Museum has recognized the strength of the Hamilton’s Carriage and that this artwork will further enhance the museum's great Contemporary Art collection.

Carriage was on view at the Bruno David Gallery in January 2011, during the OVERPAPER exhibition. A fully illustrated catalogue with an essay by Buzz Spector was published. (catalogue)

An essay by Buzz Spector

In medias res. We’re indebted to the Roman poet, Horace, for this Latin phrase, which means “in the midst of things,” but is mainly used to describe artistic narratives beginning in the middle of the action. Carmon Colangelo works this way, mixing collage, drawing, and painting with a repertoire of digital effects in producing the complex, multivalent works on paper that comprise his art. In this exhibition at Bruno David Gallery, we find an artist who stretches the parameters of his history of practice in an installation of twenty-four works, large and small, that attract the eyes while provoking the minds of viewers.

Carmon is nominally a printmaker. Indeed, his more than thirty years of studio practice begins with a rigorous, but conventional, education in traditional printmaking techniques. In “Eyedeas,” however, we see images whose procedural origins are hard to decipher. All of the work on view here employs ink jet printing, but it is not clear that all are made starting with this image-making tool. Many of these works also incorporate material supplements—in watercolor, pencil, or ink—but do these physical elements follow after or precede the virtual effects of Carmon’s digital printing? We are confronted by an accumulation of embellishments , but what is it that is being concealed?

One key to Carmon’s method is in the ongoing assortment of sketchbooks, memo pads, meeting notes, and scraps of paper in his studio. This loose record of reveries and inspirations is available for the artist’s scrutiny as he works at one or another of the several tables in the space. The floor is another site of opportunity to move images and artifacts around, and at any given moment the walls of the studio are covered with (mostly) unfinished works, often pinned closely together or even partially overlapping in order to draw out unexpected representational dynamics.

A list of words on one studio table offers another aspect of Carmon’s art:

“| FEAR | HELL | HELP | FIGURED | HUMOR ME POLLOCK | GOING NOWHERE | WINDOW | THINKING OUT LOUD TOUCHING NATURE | SLEEPWALKER | SLIDE SHOW | ZERO | PRANKSTER | L.O.L. | LOVE | SECURITY”

Large concepts and witty turns of phrase alternate here. This list, and others like it, record Carmon’s play with language, another medium of interest for an artist deeply concerned with mediating between language and image. “Eyedeas,” the punning title of this exhibition, is an exemplary conjoining of seeing with reading. In works such as Conversions, Carmon has used watercolor and graphite to add words and accompanying random letters to the digital reproduction of an interior page taken from an old (1956) issue of Art News. Word fragments, including “LIB,” “ST,” “ALEMA” and “T.WIT” float across the scanned and appropriated page. These letters are not the only supplement here; digitally rendered graphic forms in vivid orange, red, and black emanate from the work’s center, with the uppermost rays apparently disturbing a digital grid so that it seems to flutter like a veil in the wind. This “explosion” of color appears to emerge from a circular blotch of tan liquid—not more watercolor but in fact a digitally reproduced coffee stain—left there by a previous reader of the magazine.

Barely visible at the top and bottom edges of Conversion is a portion of the art magazine’s cover. The fragmented letterforms at the top can still be read: “ART,” but their inverted typographic remainders at the bottom are digitally distorted, with the descenders of the “T” and “R” apparently being sucked into that central coffee stain. Through all of these effects, the four reproductions on the original magazine page can be seen; images of the dead Christ, painted by Mantegna (twice), Manet, and Roualt, with lines of partially readable text speaking of creation, death, and transfiguration. Other meanings can now be surmised in Carmon’s hand-applied letters; “ST,” for example, as abbreviation of saint, perhaps, or else attached to a neighboring word fragment to make “STALEMA(te).” Sense making here may be stymied, but all the while we seek to read, we are in the midst of visual energies of push and pull.

The same distorted title fragment from Art News appears in another work on view, New, but this time “ART” is right-side up, and its attenuated descenders are apparently being sucked into a vortex at the work’s center. Barely readable above this vortex is a distorted and miniaturized “NEWS.” Abstracted elements in marigold yellow, scarlet, and green have been digitally distorted so that the original cover art, a Matisse papier-collé, is no longer recognizable, and here and there Carmon has added touches of watercolor over a delicately rendered graphite grid to draw our attention away from the work’s infinitely receding center. The graphic energy of the appropriated Matisse may no longer be visible, but Carmon’s digital transfiguration offers another, a “new” energy, instead.

Carmon’s interest in architecture surfaces in another suite of five prints. There is a play of architectonic references in these works, ranging from the inclusion of inset drawings of structures to pixellations evocative of skyscrapers. A sense as of gliding above what Carmon refers to as the “urban landscape” is particularly evident in Urban Copy and Zero, each of which feature PhotoShop manipulated grids that resemble clusters of tall buildings. Here and there amid the “towers” are embellishments in watercolor and pencil. These in fact were applied before the digitally printed elements, but their seamless integration into these compositions makes it impossible to read an order of making. What is present in these works is a kind of visual “explosiveness,” of energies expanding upward and outward. In Love, L.O.L., pixellation makes a Mercator projection of a world map seem to explode, but the affect here is less apocalyptic then ecstatic, as befits the hand lettering in the work which references sublime attraction and the Twitter shorthand for joy.

A comparable repertoire of effects is employed in much of “Eyedeas,” but two larger-scale works, G.R. (GR.E.EK) and E.K. (GEEK), have been printed on canvas and float framed in white enamel. These as well incorporate a reproduction of a painting by another artist, albeit in highly distorted form. Carmon has scanned images of a Gerhard Richter color chart (G.R.) and an early Ellsworth Kelly spectrum painting (E.K.) and has digitally stirred them up, collapsing the grid-structures of the originals. The distortions of these grids are dramatic; attenuations of “outer” elements are most exaggerated in color areas approaching the four corners of each canvas, with “inner” elements shrinking in scale as if retreating into a distance. Or perhaps the attenuations are indicators of force moving explosively outward. Both works invite reflection on this representational ambiguity, but their material substrates and frame types are signs of painting; cues for attentive viewers to think instead of the tensions in stretched canvases. The effect here is one of stretching the parameters of printmaking by reference to the constructing of paintings.

Carmon’s appropriation of the Richter and Kelly images is broader in scope than a simple commentary on characteristics of their art; rather, he uses these reproductions to examine how the material conditions of an art form demonstrate the contingency of all pictorial judgments. The stretched, pixilated, blurred, and scrambled images in Carmon’s work point toward a more fluid understanding that we may gain by paying attention to the physical, as well as the representational, circumstances in which we encounter art. The conditions of viewing are as much a quality of Carmon’s work as the virtuosity of his manipulations of studio tools. Such contingent circumstances are central to our engagement with Carmon’s work, which we see In medias res.

Bruno David Gallery presents in the Front Room an exhibition of new photographs titled “desert water” by San Francisco-based photographer and video artist Lisa K. Blatt. Ms. Blatt is attracted to deserts for their light, beauty and simplicity, and stays for their complexity, contradictions and secrets. Her art examines the intersection between the still and moving image, nature and culture, perception, and the political and historical implications of place. The work in the Front Room, straddles the representational and perceptual and examines how landscape may be identified by what is not visible, what is memory or what is trace. She is also showing a new video work titled “untitled (Icarus)” in the Media Room. The new video was shot in Antarctica on top of the live volcano, Mount Erebus. Hung Liu at Bruno David Gallery

Bruno David Gallery is currently showing in the Project Room a series of paintings and prints titled “Za Zhong Paintings” by Hung Liu. The "Za Zhong" breaks new territory for the artist as she honors her traditional subject matter of women and historical images from China. Her work was enhanced when, during a 1990 visit to China, Liu discovered several hundred photographs from the time of the Cultural Revolution. These photographs have formed a basis for much of her work since. Personal photos from this era are rare because families often destroyed images that might be used as evidence that they were not proletarians. Her prints are rendered in a photorealist mode that looks back to her work for the Communist Party, yet individuals that are the object, rather than the subject, of history, populate them.

Hung Liu was born in the People's Republic, China and emigrated to the United States in 1984. One of the first Chinese artists to study in the U.S., Liu's works represent the ongoing tension between emigration and immigration. Liu has received numerous awards, including two painting fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, and her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally in such venues as the Smithsonian Institution, the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography, the National Museum of American Art and the Walker Art Center. She is currently the Professor of Painting at Mills College in Oakland, California. The exhibition is in conjunction with the SGC International Conference hosted by Washington University in St. Louis - Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts and organized by Trillium Graphics. You are invited to the opening reception (v2) of This City, Daily Rising, a solo exhibition of new work by the Shanghai-based artist Christina Shmigel, on Friday, February 11, 5-9pm. The exhibition is now fully installed (view it online) and we hope to see you Friday night.

Christina Shmigel’s first solo US exhibition since 2005, is composed of three interrelated installations. Continually shifting between macro- and microcosmic views, the installations are emblematic of Shmigel’s play with scale and size, intimacy and monumentality, and create for the viewer something of the vibrancy & intensity of Shanghai (China), the city where she now lives and works. There is much in this exhibition that springs from the local knowledge of Shanghai but also much that speaks to more universal themes. How do we decipher and interpret experience, making meaning amidst that which is foreign to us? How do we come to know the world thru association and memory and projection? And, most importantly, the question that has always been central to Shmigel’s work, how do the inanimate things that we build and that we surround ourselves with, reveal the nature of our humanity? In the Front Room, Bruno David Gallery presents an installation titled Portraits: Artists and Friends by Leslie Laskey. Jessica Baran in the Riverfront Times describes the work that "....reimagines the gallery’s entry space as a lamp-lit reading room, in which drawn and painted portraits of the artist’s favored forbears hang in gilt frames or lean in piled decorative arrangements. The effect is unapologetically and as such, charming – endorsing full throttle the romantic myth of the golden age of avant-garde “genius”...." (link) The series started in 2008 are of Giacometti, Matisse, Gertrude Stein, Alice B. Toklas, Louis XIV, Picasso and other artists, writers and friends. Jill Downen at COCA and The Luminary

Jill Downen is currently showing two new works. One is a permanent installation titled "Currents" at COCA Center of Creative Arts (here) and the other, an installation titled "(dis) Mantle" at The Luminary Center for the Arts (here)
Currents at COCA was chosen from a field of 60 national and international artists in a competition held earlier this year. The concept and design were developed by Jill Downen+Act3, a collaboration between Jill Downen and interdisciplinary design studio Act3 (link).

(dis)Mantle at The Luminary is composed primarily of construction materials, seamlessly blending the artist’s work with the space’s natural construct. As seen in previous exhibitions at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis and the Bruno David Gallery, Downen’s organic and sensual installations are spare but overflowing with an exchange between the body, architecture and experience.

The exhibition “The Sky Is No Longer The Limit-Constructions and Proposals” by Gary Passanise in the Front Room, contains ideas in miniature, revealing unsettling, unstable environments within. Grappling with the evolution of the American dream and the uncertainty of contemporary times, we are compelled to explore new possibilities and re-consider the path of our history.
Prints and drawings illustrate proposals for site-specific installations offering a window into his always evolving creative process. Paradox and absurdity abound inviting viewers into metaphorical relationships and unexpected realities. Passanise's recent work blurs the boundaries between what exists and what can be imagined without the restrictions of material limitations.
Passanise received his B.F.A. from Webster University Saint Louis, and his M.F.A. from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. He has exhibited his work nationally and internationally and has been the recipient of numerous awards and endowments. Passanise is currently the Director of Painting at Webster University’s Leigh Gerdine College of Art.

Barry Anderson at Bruno David Gallery

Bruno David Gallery is pleased to present a new video by Barry Anderson in the Media Room. Since the founding of the Bruno David Gallery, the core mission has been to support the creation of significant new works of art. Barry Anderson’s remarkable and compelling video make him one of the most impressive video-artists at the gallery.

The new work entitled “Totem (1)”, a three-channel video created in 2010, depicts, at a distance, a turbulent tornado against a yellow ochre sky, overtaking a Midwestern landscape reminiscent of Dorothy’s Kansas. Upon closer inspection, a mass of swirling faces overwhelmed by this natural force becomes visible. These faces, a conglomeration of pop icons, speak to Anderson’s recent interest in cultural imagery from 1950s to 1970s Americana. Rather than highlighting the era’s empty consumerism, as many artists have before him, Anderson emphasizes the homogeneity of the era, contrasting it with the taste for individualism in modern American culture. Anderson’s interest in video stems from his early work with photography. He avoids succumbing to the viewer’s expectations for a narrative storyline, instead working with looping scenes, audio, and images in what he prefers to call “moving images.”

Originally from Texas, Anderson lives and works in Kansas City, Missouri. He received his B.F.A. from the University of Texas, Austin and his M.F.A. from the Henry Radford Hope School of Fine Arts at Indiana University.

Kelley Johnson at Bruno David Gallery

Bruno David Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition by Kelley Johnson. The exhibition “Recent Paintings” includes paintings of complex abstract landscapes. A fully illustrated color catalogue with writings by James Yood and Vara Lyons accompany the exhibition.

A native of St. Louis originally trained in the figurative tradition; Johnson’s recent paintings move beyond the classical skills he obtained as an art student in Paris. Completely removed from an earthly environment, the artist’s works present vibrantly, at times disturbingly, chaotic other worlds of raw energy and emotion. Yet underneath the jarring tones and clashing lines, his works retain a discipline, depth and meticulously impromptu nature characteristic of figurative conventions. Inspired by the manipulation of space and emotions, Johnson’s canvases present an overall effect of disorder so effectively controlled and manipulated that its thoughtful planning becomes invisible in the process.

At their core, Johnson’s current paintings stem from recent personal struggles and inner conflicts. Physically intimidating and engulfing due to their sheer size, this particular set of canvases creates a conflict in its viewers as they observe their own discomfort with the uncertainty of ambiguous spaces and planes that continuously subvert and interrupt created volumes. Indeed, we are left with the sense that we have been transported into Johnson’s inner psyche and unsure of how to resolve the struggle—which, of course, is precisely what the artist intended.

IRIS NESHER: In The Dark Rooms

Bruno David Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition by Italian-born, Israel-based artist Iris Nesher. The exhibition "In the Dark Rooms" which opens, Friday, September 10, is a series of photographs that investigates the very essence of female creativity. Nesher produces provocative, hauntingly beautiful photographs of a selection of female writers, poets, and playwrights of various cultural and religious backgrounds. The powerful insight into the subject’s psyche provided by Nesher’s skilled lens is bolstered by the inclusion of a passage written or chosen by the subject herself. While some choose to display the words in the setting around them, others have literally written their thoughts on their bodies, as a testament to the power of language to convey the innermost corners of the mind, in all of its richness and complexity. By defying convention, these women have marked themselves and their environments, taking back the power of the language and using it to express themselves, rather than allowing others to speak for them.

A fully illustrated color catalogue with writings by Laura Beckman, Yigal Schwartz and Meir Aharonson accompany the exhibition. (catalogue)

Nesher attended the School of Visual Arts in New York and later on California Art Institute of Los Angeles. Her work has been featured in exhibits in both the United States and Europe. This past year, her work was the subject of a one-person exhibition at Moscow’s Museum of Contemporary Art and will travel in 2011 to the Jewish Museum of London, England. (link)

We are pleased to announce that two of our represented artists, Yvette Drury Dubinsky and Chris Kahler, are presenting solo exhibitions this fall.

Yvette Drury Dubinsky’s most recent work, Harvests, a collection of large chromogenic prints which draw upon locally harvested organic forms for inspiration, is on display at the Farm Project Space + Gallery in Wellfleet, Massachusetts. The exhibition opens August 28, 2010.

Following Chris Kahler’s critically acclaimed one-person show at Bruno David Gallery last winter, for which he received a glowing review in Art in America, Kahler is exhibiting his latest work, Bio-Dynamic, at the David Richard Contemporary in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The opening will be held on September 3rd from 5-8 p.m..

Bruno David Gallery is pleased to announce that Joan Hall’s most recent museum exhibition, “Your Existence is Not Unlike my Own”, which is currently exhibited at the Silkeborg Arts Centre in Denmark from May 29 to September 5, 2010, will be travelling to the Blue Star Contemporary Arts Center in San Antonio, Texas this fall 2010.

Hall’s work brings the dynamic power of the ocean indoors to remind us of humanity’s dependence on basic organic elements – air, sea, and sand – from which we originated, and to which we will someday return. Hall created the installation from hand-woven net and strips of paper which she molded, printed, painted, and felted. Through this delicate medium, she compares the fragility of human existence to the ephemeral, volatile nature of the sea. The floor of the gallery is covered with cast pulp painted pieces representing the 27 hurricanes in 2005, thus questioning the impact of human activity on global warming, and in turn, our own well-being. Above all, this poetic installation chronicles the personal relationship Hall has developed with the sea after sailing and navigating over 25,000 miles of marine waters.

Joan Hall is the Kenneth E. Hudson Professor at Sam Fox School of Art at Washington University in St. Louis.

Jill Downen to Create a Permanent Sculpture Installation at COCA

The Bruno David Gallery is proud to announce that one of our affiliated artists, Jill Downen, has been selected to create a permanent sculpture installation in COCA’s two-story atrium. Downen’s organic, undulating mixed-media installation, entitled "Currents", was chosen from a pool of sixty international artists.

This is yet another success for Jill Downen, who won the John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship in 2010 and received a John and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation travel grant in 2009.

The winning installation, Currents, will ebb and flow across COCA’s atrium wall, comparing the force of a river to the impact of the creative arts on the diverse communities it affects. Act3, a communication strategy and design firm, will collaborate with Downen to create original soundscape compositions and theatrical lighting activated by visitors entering the space.

The artwork will honor COCA's founding executive director, Stephanie Riven. The work will be dedicated on October 1, 2010. For additional information, please visit COCA's website. (here) (pdf)

The group exhibition RECESSION REJUVENATIONS, is a testament to the resilience of the creative impulse in the face of economic adversity. Even as the global community is wracked by recession, political unrest, and enormous threats to the environment, artists remain committed to following their inspirations within the confines of their studios. This exhibition of small works represents the current artistic endeavors of St. Louis’ foremost contemporary artists and provides an insight into some of the current trends and pulse of the local art community.

The confluence of distinguished art institutions with an array of innovative artists forms the basis of a vibrant arts scene in this metropolitan area. In addition to eminent visual arts establishments such as The Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts, the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, The Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum, the St. Louis Art Museum, the Sheldon Art Galleries, the local arts scene is enriched by musical and performing arts at the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra, The Fox Theatre, the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, The Sheldon, and the Saint Louis Blues Society. In conjunction with its current exhibition Urban Alchemy/Gordon Matta-Clark, the Pulitzer Foundation for the Arts has organized three artist-drive projects, one of which concludes with an exhibition that will be on view within the Bruno David Gallery. Chicago-based artist and 2010 Whitney Biennial participant Theaster Gates will exhibit “Dry Bones and Other Parables from the North,” featuring a series of installations richly influenced by the Book of Ezekiel that address the future of the Hyde Park neighborhood of St. Louis. The Pulitzer’s guest curator for this project is Juan William Chávez of Boots Contemporary Art Space.

In this exhibition, Gates responds with his own artwork to Hyde Park residents’ thoughts and desires. These residents formulated a neighborhood “Master Plan” with the help of Chávez and Cujawa Architecture. Gates’ project brings to the forefront the current state of cultural, spiritual, and familial life in the Hyde Park community while visualizing some of the residents’ hopes for upcoming years. These installations at the Bruno David Gallery will spark new conversations regarding the present and future of this historic St. Louis neighborhood.

Jill Downen and Van McElwee awarded the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship

Bruno David Gallery is proud to announce that two of our affiliated artists, Jill Downen and Van McElwee, have each been awarded the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship.

“It is remarkable that out of 180 Fellowships awarded, two artists were selected from St. Louis, and even more remarkably from the same gallery – the Bruno David Gallery!” says Bruno. L. David, director.

The Guggenheim Memorial Foundation grants this award to those who have already demonstrated exceptional capacity for productive scholarship or exceptional creative ability in the arts. They are chosen by a Committee of Selection composed entirely of former Fellows on the basis of stellar past achievements and the promise for continued accomplishment. The Foundation has awarded 180 Fellowships to artists, scientists, and scholars. The successful candidates were chosen from a group of almost 3,000 applicants. Jill Downen and Van McElwee both live and work in St. Louis and have shown their recent work at the Bruno David Gallery.

Jill Downen was awarded a Creative Arts Fellowship for her work in the field of Fine Arts. Downen is an interdisciplinary artist who is currently exploring the interaction between architectural space and the temporality of the human body. Downen uses organic structures to heighten the metaphor of the building-as-body, incorporating bulges, tendons, and biomorphic elements into walls, floors, and support structures. Her work is a meditation on the way space changes over time. Her last solo exhibition “Hard Hat Optional” was shown at the gallery in 2009. (here)

Van McElwee was awarded a Creative Arts Fellowship for his work in the field of Audio and Video. McElwee’s work will be featured in a ten-year retrospective at Anthology Film Archive, New York, on June 6, 2010. In the words of Anthology’s curator Andrew Lampert, “McElwee is an ultra prolific digital pioneer of the highest order.” He continues to innovate in his non-narrative videos, altering and invading his software to create a complex patchwork of imagery and sound that stretches the boundaries of the imagination. Bruno David Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition by Cindy Tower. “Decadense” [sic] includes recent paintings of decrepit, isolated and condemned architectural settings. A fully illustrated color catalogue with writings by Charlie Finch (here) and Angela L. Miller (here) accompany the exhibition.

Originally a sculptor and performance artist, Cindy Tower lets her creative background shine through in paintings that have become visual evidence of performance. Raw in spirit and conviction, Tower’s highly articulated works engage the viewer in a visceral, otherworldly experience. Composite views of decrepitude become metaphors of bodily functions and reflect the political climate of our modern world. Wet, gloppy oil paint is applied in a loose yet precise manner in which subjects continuously dematerialize and reemerge. Tower’s painting practice mirrors her concept of gradual accumulation that not only provides an exhausting, claustrophobic sensation but also raises questions regarding the complexity and level of exchange that occurs in our modern world. Presenting the themes of consumption, intimacy, obsolescence and loss, the paintings are an overwhelming celebration of materials and process. They provide the viewer with an intuitive, physical experience that both engages and engulfs him or her in the self-contained environment of each artwork.

Born in Alamogordo, New Mexico, Cindy Tower received her B.F.A. from Cornell University and was a forerunner of the NYC Williamsburg art scene in the early eighties. She went on to obtain her MFA in 1988 from the University of California, San Diego, where she studied under Eleanor Antin and Allan Kaprow. In 2005, she settled in St. Louis to paint disappearing industries. In addition, she has taught at Washington University St. Louis, The New York Studio School in New York and Savannah College of Art and Design. Tower has exhibited nationally and has been the focus of numerous one-person exhibitions including the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York.

In the Front Room, the gallery presents “Heard but not Said,” an exhibition of small paintings by Nanette Boileau. Boileau’s inspiration for this series of work comes from a childhood experience in which a classmate falsely accused her of using a racial slur. Having never heard the insult before, Boileau nonetheless recognized the word’s evilness. According to the artist, “Epithets separate childhood friends on the school playground and divide people beyond the baseball diamond.”

The use of the works’ small format forces the viewer to stand close to them and develop an intimate connection with each piece. This close proximity of the body to the painting allows the viewer to reflect on their personal relationship with the word. The pieces are painted in such a manner to appear across the room as an empty blank canvas. Upon closer inspection, the word embedded into the surface comes to light. The paintings’ white coating visually symbolizes the artist’s participation as a white woman within dominant culture. These artworks signify linguistic and visual awareness of difference and serve as a physical manifestation of the embedded signs and codes of behavior within our everyday.

Nanette Boileau is currently a doctoral student at Saint Louis University in the department of American Studies with an emphasis on Visual Culture. Boileau received her M.F.A. from Pasadena Art Center College of Design and her Bachelor of Fine Arts, from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.

In the Media Room, Multidisciplinary artist Dickson Beall, in a five-minute single channel video titled “Membrane Moments: Journey through” Loss with music by Chris W. Treloar, explores artist Cindy Tower’s creative work, through his dense layers of pictorialism and overlapping moments in time. Beall’s multi-faceted video records broken frames of continuity—a female artist at work in a dangerous and decaying setting, and her interaction with those who inhabit such places. Presenting Tower’s truck as studio on the road and, in the context of a performance in time, Beall layers planes of experience into a powerful narrative. The multi-layers of video and audio create an experience of detritus that mirrors Tower’s own work and documents her intense concern for the lost people and places that society has abandoned. Beall’s overlapping scenes are burned, cracked, stained, spotted, scratched and aggressive with energy, anger and concern. He presents a push of information to create ambiguity in meaning, metaphor and random chance. The video reflects Beall’s interest in dreams, fleeting thoughts, memories and reflections, as he documents the way selective consciousness accumulates and ultimately disappears. The music by drummer Chris W. Treloar of Membranophones heightens the tension in time that is experienced in the making of art in a transient space, blurring distinctions between painting, video and photography while playing the role of both participating artist and viewer.

Dickson Beall attended Washington University art school and received a B. A. in Art History from the University of Missouri, St. Louis, and a Doctorate in Psychology from Eden in St. Louis. He is the art critic for the West End Word. Chris W. Treloar holds Bachelor and Master of Music degrees in Percussion Performance from the St. Louis Conservatory of Music. Mr. Treloar has performed, recorded and toured with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, the Illinois Symphony Orchestra and the Opera Theatre of St. Louis. Currently, Mr. Treloar is the timpanist for the Bach Society of St. Louis, Masterworks Chorale in Belleville, Illinois, and the Cathedral Basilica - St. Louis. He teaches at Chaminade College Preparatory School where he is the percussion specialist.

Todd Anderson was invited to the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop in New York City to make a new set of prints scheduled to be released in February 2010. He will have a solo exhibition at Brookhaven College in Dallas, Texas in March 2010 and Swope Art Museum in Terre Haute, Indiana in September 2010.

Dickson Beall’s most recent video, “Membrane Moments,” documents Cindy Tower’s creative process. It will be shown in the New Media Room in conjunction with Tower’s solo exhibition at the gallery opening March 19, 2010.

Ingo Baumgarten is planning his first solo show at Ronam Gallery in Seoul, Korea, scheduled to open spring 2011.

Laura Beard is living in Texas where she is an Assistant Professor at the University of North Texas in Denton. She recently received a research grant from the University of North Texas to study the European Abstract Expressionists in London.

Lisa K. Blatt was in several international and U.S. shows in late 2009 including a solo show, “Polar Extremes”, at the Reykjavik Photography Museum in Iceland, “Kat A4”, in Gothernburg, Sweden, “Air Cube+” at Richard Levy Gallery in Albuquerque, New Mexico and “Desert Sexy” at the Constant Gallery in Los Angeles. In 2010, she will be in “Front + Center”, at Headlands Center for the Arts, in San Francisco, California and was selected for a Djerrasi art residency in March, in Woodside, California.

Nanette Boileau’s exhibition of small paintings entitled, “Heard but not Said” will be shown in the Front Room with an opening on March 19, 2010 in conjunction with Cindy Tower’s solo exhibition.

Martin Brief is in a group show entitled, “Critical Mass Creative Stimulus” at the Regional Arts Commission Gallery, St. Louis. He is also exhibiting work in the show “Old Media/Old News” at the Luminary Center for the Arts, St. Louis. In addition, he is a recipient of the 2010 Great Rivers Biennial. His subsequent solo exhibition opens April 30 at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis.

Shawn Burkard is currently showing his latest photographs entitled “Phantasmagoria” in the gallery’s Front Room. A fully illustrated catalog will be published this spring with an essay by Laura Beckman.

Bunny Burson’s recent prints are included in the exhibition “Women Printmakers” at Washington University in St. Louis School of Law, along with Yvette Dubinsky and Joan Hall. In addition, she has been awarded a residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris during May and June 2010. During her residency, she will collaborate with her daughter, musician Clare Burson, on a project about their family history in World War II Germany and Eastern Europe. Her artwork will also appear on the album SILVER AND ASH, a song cycle by Clare Burson, due to be released by Rounder Records in May 2010.

Carmon Colangelo had several prints included in the “MATRIX: Contemporary Printmaking” show at the Florida State University Museum of Fine Arts, curated by Joe E. Sanders. A catalogue was published for the exhibition.

Alex Couwenberg recently had a painting purchased by the Pomona College Museum of Art in Los Angeles, California for their permanent collection.

Jill Downen’s recent exhibition, “Monochrome,” was shown at the Manifest Gallery in Cincinnati, OH. Her installation “Hard Hat Optional” was recently exhibited at Bruno David Gallery. A catalogue of this exhibition is available with an essay by Andrea L. Ferber.

Yvette Drury Dubinsky was named a distinguished alumnus at Washington University in St. Louis. In addition to the Bruno David Gallery, she is showing her work in Provincetown, Massachusetts at Gallery Ehva and in Wellfleet, Massachusetts at Farm gallery. In Provincetown, MA, she is also a member of the Advisory Board of the Fine Arts Work Center, and a committee member for the annual auction at the Provincetown Art Association. An exhibition catalogue for her last show at the gallery was published with an essay by Peter Marcus. Along with Joan Hall and Bunny Burson, she is in the exhibition “Women Printmakers” at Washington University in St. Louis School of Law.

Eleanor Dubinsky continues to write songs, make videos and perform her music. She attended the MIDEM, an international music conference, in Cannes, France and is scheduled to perform at the Philadelphia Museum of Art's “Art After 5” series on July 2, 2010.

Maya Escobar has exhibited in San Jose, CA; New Haven, CT; Chicago, IL; and St. Louis, MO in the last three months. Her work was reviewed in The Jewish Chronicle, The Pittsburg Tribune-Review, and New Haven Magazine. Exhibited pieces include Acciones Plásticas Purikura, Internet-based performance/illustration collaboration with curator, photographer and graphic artist Rio Yañez. She collaborated with her father, Gonzalo Escobar, in making a multi-sensory sound installation titled, “Talking About Orchard Street. In January 2010, Escobar co-founded Floreciendo, a Chicago-based women’s art and culture collective. In March, her work will be shown in a multimedia video exhibition, “Chile + Cultura,” in Santiago de Chile. Currently, her video “el es frida kahlo” is being shown in the New Media Room at the gallery.

Corey Escoto was recently included in a group show in collaboration with Canary Project: Works on Climate Change 2006-2009 at Indiana University’s SoFa Gallery in Bloomington, IN. He is currently working on an upcoming solo show for October 2010 at the Metropolitan Gallery in St. Louis.

Beverly Fishman’s current exhibition, “Pharmako – Xanadu,” is on display at the gallery in the Project Room now through March 6, 2010. She will be showing her work in the Invitational Exhibition of Visual Arts at the American Academy of Arts and Letters in New York City, opening March 9, 2010. Fishman will also have a solo show at Pulse Art Fair in New York City with Galerie Jean Luc and Takako Richard. In addition, her installation titled “AXA VIP Lounge” will be permanently installed at the Miami Art Museum.

Damon Freed is teaching part time at State Fair Community College in Sedalia, MO and at the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, MO. He recently came back from a long trip in the Philippines with great inspiration for new poems and color ideas.

Joan Hall has a solo museum exhibition scheduled to open May 29, 2010 at the KunstCentret Silkeborg Bad in Silkeborg, Denmark. The show is in celebration of the renovation and subsequent transformation of a paper mill into a museum dedicated to works on paper. She will also be giving a gallery talk in conjunction with the show. Along with Bunny Burson and Yvette Dubinsky, she is in the exhibition “Women Printmakers” at Washington University School of Law.

Takashi Horisaki is currently working on an as-yet-untitled project with the Buffalo Arts Studio slated to open June 18, 2010. The project will involve casting parts of abandoned yet livable homes in Buffalo and the creation of a cross between a Buckminster Fuller Dome and a primitive tent-like structure. In addition, he is scheduled to exhibit “Social Dress New Orleans” at Eastern Illinois University in September 2010.

Kelley Johnson has a solo exhibition of his new large paintings scheduled to open at Bruno David Gallery in September 2010. A fully illustrated catalog will be available with essays by James Yood and Vara Lyons.

Chris Kahler’s recent solo exhibition “Hybrid Dynamic” at Bruno David Gallery was reviewed by Ivy Cooper in Art in America, Miriam Moynihan in St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Jessica Baran in Riverfront Times, and Ivy Cooper in the St. Louis Beacon. An exhibition catalog was published by the gallery with an essay by James Yood.

Leslie Laskey had a fantastic exhibition “Tango” at Bruno David Gallery last fall. The gallery published an exhibition catalog with an essay by Jim Harris. Along with his solo exhibition, the group show “Legacy: the Work of Leslie Laskey’s Former Students” donated half of its proceeds to the Laskey Fund for College of Architecture students in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis.

Peter Marcus was invited to do a portfolio print for the 2010 Southern Graphics Conference in Philadelphia.

Van McElwee recently showed his video “Alternity: A Figure in Manifold Space” at Bruno David Gallery. A catalogue of his “Still” prints was published with an essay by David Bonetti. In October, his work was included in the Filmmaker’s Showcase in the St. Louis Film Conference at Washington University. In November, McElwee showed “St. Louis Cinema on the Edge” at the American Institute of Media Archivists in St. Louis and “Liquid Crystal” at the Media Art Friesland video program at the Northern Film Festival in Leeuwarden, Netherlands. His work, “With a View to the Sound,” was shown at Kunstfilmtag in Dusseldorf, Germany in December.

William Morris recently showed his video “8ms” in the New Media Room. He designed the video to test the eye's ability to perceive and interpret a barrage of rapid changes in imagery while referring to analog and digital reference signal transmission.

Patricia Olynyk’s recent work was included in “MATRIX—Contemporary Printmaking” at theMuseum of Fine Arts, Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida. Her “Sensing Terrains” video production screening showed at the Digital Video Theater (Astronomy Dome Theater) in Jordan Hall at the College of Science in Notre Dame University, Notre Dame, Indiana. Olynyk was a guest speaker and panelist at both the Ars Electronica Center in Linz, Austria and the International Conference on the Arts in Society in Venice, Italy in conjunction with the Venice Biennal. She was also a panel moderator at Beyond the Studio: The New Landscape of Social and Situated Practices, National Council of Art Administrators (NCAA) and Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture (ACSA) joint conference, Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis. She received the Diversity and Inclusion Grant for Multiple Feminisms, Coordinating Council for Diversity Initiatives at Washington University in St. Louis. The Leonardo Education and Art Forum for The International Society for the Arts, Sciences and Technology elected Patricia Olynyk their new chair. A fully illustrated catalog on her last exhibition “Probe” at the gallery will be published in the Spring.

Gary Passanise has joined the Bruno David Gallery and will be exhibiting a set of small prints in the Front Room in September 2010. He is the recipient of the Pollack Krasner Award for Painting, The National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, and The Ford Foundation Award for Painting. In 1990, Passanise established The Santo Foundation, a private organization to assist and provide artists with individual grants, travel stipends, and subsidized work-space.

Robert Pettus recently spent time in Los Angeles and on the East Coast working on his "Sun/Water" photographs. His work was also used extensively in a new book on Fumihiko Maki by Kenneth Frampton and F. Maki.

Dionna Raedeke’s exhibition, “The Addition”, was recently displayed in the Front Room at Bruno David Gallery. Her show was reviewed by Miriam Moynihan in the St. Louis Post Dispatch and by Ivy Cooper in the St. Louis Beacon.

Cherie Sampson was invited by Director Jorge Luis Santana to the 2nd International Festival of Video Art in Camagüey, Cuba held in November 2009 to do a live solo video-performance piece, "Signed with Reddish Earth." This was the second time Cherie participated in the Camagüey International Festival. In the 2008 festival, several of her video works were presented in a solo installation at the Galeria 'Julian Morales', a gallery operated by UNEAC (Association of Cuban Writers and Artists). A selection of video art works from the 2008 Camagüey video festival, including Cherie's, were screened at the Festival Internacional del Cine Pobre in Gibera, Cuba in April 2009.

Frank Schwaiger recently installed a large steel sculpture entitled “Leaf Pavilion” at the Laumeier Sculpture Park in St. Louis. This large sculpture (36 x 32 x 32 ft) is now part of the park’s permanent installation.

Charles Schwall produced an interactive sound-sculpture installation at the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis titled “Curiosity and Knowledge” as part of a collaborative event with the St. Michael School of Clayton and the Contemporary. A new catalog of Schwall’s paintings with an essay by William Herndon was published through Bruno David Gallery.

Christina Shmigel has been included in a group show called “Make Over/Cover Up” at the OV (Oriental Vista) Gallery in Shanghai. The show was featured in the art section of the inaugural issue of Time Out: Shanghai and reviewd by Robin Peckham in ARTFORUM. Shmigel’s work will also appear in a Chinese magazine In the Studio. Her one-person exhibition is scheduled to open this fall. She lives and works in Shanghai, China.

Buzz Spector is currently showing “SHELF LIFE: selected work” at Bruno David Gallery. Miriam Moynihan in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Stefene Russell in St. Louis Magazine, Jessica Baran in Riverfront Times, and Byron Kerman in Sauce Magazine reviewed his exhibition. The gallery published an exhibition catalog with essays by himself, Garrett Stewart, and Dora Apel. His essay, “Like Shields, Like Shells: The Graphite Reliefs of Roberto Mannino,” appeared in the Winter 2009 issue of Hand Papermaking. His artwork will be featured in two books which are to be published in 2010:The Studio Reader: On the Space of Artists, edited by Mary Jane Jacob and Michelle Grabner, University of Chicago Press, and Visible Writings: Cultures, Forms, Readings, edited by Marija Dalbello and Mary Shaw, Rutgers University Press.

Lindsey Stouffer participated in the Architecture and Humanities Research Association [AHRA] International Conference in Edinburgh. She presented and co-authored a paper, “Blighted,” with Igor Marjanovic. “Blighted” will be published by Routledge Press in Fall 2010. Her work will appear in a group exhibition opening in February 2010 at the Teal Art Gallery in Breckenridge, Colorado. In addition, she will participate in a group exhibition at the Foundry Art Center opening in November 2010. Currently, she is at work on an installation titled “Scribe.”

Cindy Tower has an upcoming solo exhibition called “Decadense” [sic] opening at the gallery March 19, 2010. An exhibition catalog with an essay by Charlie Finch will be published.

Mario Trejo’s series “In Space of Color” is currently showing at Chesterfield Arts with One Million (At least one million hand drawn and counted idiosyncratic circles), on display for the first time in St. Louis. Trejo’s work was recently shown at The Museum of Pocket Art and featured in a two-night retrospective show at The Lab in San Francisco. Mario is scheduled to curate “Abstraction Small” for The Museum of Pocket Art in early December. His solo show at the Metropolitan Gallery will open during the 2010/2011 season.

Brett Williams received a 2009/2010 fellowship with the Community Arts Training Institute at the St. Louis Regional Arts Commission. On February 20, 2010, a performance/installation piece will be shown at Floor Length and Tux in Chicago. He will also be exhibiting a new video at Bruno David Gallery during the upcoming season.

Ken Worley is continuing working on his Rockwood Reservation Series for his upcoming exhibition at Bruno David Gallery.

Beverly Fishman at Bruno David Gallery

In this current exhibition, Beverly Fishman delves into the cultural implications and consequences of pharmaceutical overload while enticing the audience with the pills' sleek visual seductiveness. As an artist, Fishman has long engaged with questions of art, technology and the body. Through this work, she ponders why a seeming cure to our hectic days and emotional strain is also, in effect, a poison. Her enveloping milieus of intense fluorescent colors, repeating patterns, and sizable scale deliberately affect the viewer on both a physical and intellectual level.

The Pharmako sculptures evoke the overt appeal of the chemical compounds frequently used to alter our minds and bodies. They represent a broad spectrum of over-the-counter, prescription, and illegal pills-all of which have entered an arena of quasi-designer products that combine technology with attractive aesthetics (Eldepryl, Valium, Ziac, Ativan, Tegretol, Tenuate, Nolvadex, Maxzide, Fosamax, Zebeta). In particular, Extasy pills display fun, pop icons that subsequently attract and associate a young user with the branded identity of the pill's maker. Overall, the resultant array of pills is as expansive in coloration as their real life counterparts are in function.

Fishman's Xanadu Series of chrome pill sculptures takes the seduction and inclusion of the viewer to another level with gleaming exteriors that mask their dangerous possibilities. The viewer can be seen in the artwork itself through his mirrored image, thus consolidating his identity with the pill and its resultant effects. Through different angles and reflections, each of us is affected by the work in a unique manner, a visual metaphor for the varying physical and mental consequences the same pharmaceutical can have on any of us.
